To achieve financial success producing entertainment and art, whatever material is offered has to reflect the interests if not the views of popular culture at the time.

Arguably the most successful movie franchise in the last decade or more has been the Avengers series of films which have made between $20 – $25 BILLION since their release.

In the final installments, Avengers Infinity Wars and Endgame (Spoiler Alert), the character Thanos sets about randomly wiping out half the life of the universe to restore ‘Balance’.

When applied to the actual population crisis we face on earth, to some people at least, this may appear to be an extreme but potentially viable solution.

The fact that the major powers in the world currently seem hell bent on promoting the philosophy of ‘Us Against Them’ thereby generating fear, hatred and a desire for destructive conflict indicates a supreme lack of vision on their behalf. Even if one can somehow put aside the reprehensible disregard for the basic human right to life and the billions of deaths such conflict has caused in the last century, there remains the stark reality of the permanently scarred landscapes such destruction leaves in its wake.

If these points do not carry the weight of the argument against armed conflict and genocide then consider this. As shown in the graph below, in 1975 the population of the world was approximately 4 billion, less than half what it is today. This means that it will take less than a generation to double the current population of Earth.

Worse still, 16 billion, which we will reach in less than 50 years, is the figure at which even the most conservative estimates claim that we will be unable to feed ourselves.

Try a Google Search for ‘what is the maximum population the earth can sustain?’ and you find that most experts believe our upper limit to be closer to a population of 10 billion.

Irregardless, the speed of population growth these figures represent proves that enacting anything like the Thanos solution will solve absolutely nothing.
